The history of the Kornschütte in Lucerne
The Kornschütte is a historic hall on the ground floor of Lucerne Town Hall. It was built in 1606 and was originally intended as a shop for grain and other foodstuffs.
The construction of the Kornschütte was commissioned by the city of Lucerne. The architect, Anton Isenmann, who had also designed the town hall, was responsible for the construction. The Kornschütte was built in the Italian Renaissance style and is an important example of this architectural style in Switzerland.
The building served as a department store until the 19th century. During this time, it was an important centre for trade in the Lucerne region. After the Second World War, however, the Kornschütte was no longer needed as a shop. Instead, it was used for various other purposes - including as a warehouse, exhibition space and event venue.
In 1983, the Kornschütte was extensively renovated and remodelled. The original condition of the building was restored. Since the renovation, the hall has once again been used for various events.
